Throughout wedding planning, I’ve found myself saying, “Oh, I’m not traditional, that’s why I’m not doing X.”
Well, in an ode to my more traditional self, let’s talk about the items that I’m keeping traditional:
- Not letting him see my dress before the wedding
This is a decision I made a long time ago, albeit a difficult one. See, we live together and I love my dress and I really want someone else to be able to see it and admire it just like I do. However, he’s so good about this one that he won’t even enter the room it’s in, even though it’s in the closet behind a closed door in a large white bag. So for now, I get to admire it alone.
- Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue
I haven’t figured out exactly what each of the items will be, but I know that I want to carry on this tradition. Not because I’m superstitious, but because I think it’s a fun one. I like the idea of incorporating an item that was my mom’s or my grandmother’s on our wedding day as my something old, but more on that in another post!
- Changing my name
This is a debate we see often around the ‘bee, and it was one that I did not even think twice about. In fact, one of my bridesmaids even gave me a metal letter “L” as an engagement gift in honor of my new last name that I happily placed as decoration next to some of our engagement photos. It will be strange to no longer be called by my current name, and I’m certain that it will take some getting used to. One of my college friends even told me that he was going to continue to refer to me by my maiden name, which is fine, as a lot of people call me by my last name, but it made me realize that changing my name will be a big shift for a lot of people, not just me. It is important to me though, and I look forward to sharing a last name with Mr. Fro Yo.
So what are some traditions that you’re keeping for your wedding?
